How do you determine CPU time? It seems I read somewhere in XP you can shutdown background programs to free up processor work and speed up certain programs like the newer games who seem to slow the cpu and video card to a crawl. I have the inspiron with mb ati I also have a 1 GB of ram. Some of the graphic intensive programs will slow framerate to a crawl and I would like to remedy that. Browse Community.

I am currently running no other active applications other than iexplorer, and my process list has nothing ambiguous in it. Full virus scans have revealed no viruses and everything is up to date. See this post from Prachand for a possible solution -. Your solution does not solve the issue. Rtv scan is taking ,k of my computer's memory and all the registry keys are there.

It seems Symantec has this issue for years and you guys are just ignoring it. Even when I disable it, it still keeps the memory usage in the same level. Looks like a memory leak to me. I suggest you open a support case for this issue. You're also on an old version of SAV. I believe the latest is Lowly end user here. Old Dell Pentium 4 2. Same problem?

Also showing a minor blip at the same time is ccSvcHst. IT can be maddeningly slow at times - I am searching for fixes in the meantime. So you're saying that Symantec is defective, they won't fix it, and I should upgrade to another Symantec product? What kind of sense does that make!! Looks like it's time to change AV Vendors. I admit I am using an old Symantec version - 9. Generally no matter what I had running rtvscan. Now as soon as I open just firefox and outlook rtvscan. As far as I know I have not installed anything new recently to cause this beyond the normal Symantec updates.

I can understand companies not supporting old products but it seems difficult to understand how you could not know what is causing this. Just being pedantic with an "upgrade your product" appears to be a company stance rather than a support or service one. You must know people will start to look around for other anti-virus vendors. Don't you care? With that logic, you might as well abandon the IT field altogether. By trial and error I have worked out the problem is when Symantec checks my email in Microsoft Outlook.

When I start Outlook as the emails come in the memory rtvscan uses goes up fairly rapidly to a ceiling of around KB and stays there. Thanks, Zappas. This service keeps in touch with the Symantec System Center via "keepalive packets" so that updates can be delivered to you quickly. As it is the main component of "real-time virus scanning" for Norton Anti-Virus 7.

That said, there are some known compatibility issues with WordPerfect, so make sure to check the Symantec site for product updates as opposed to virus updates. Also, if you have the Corporate Edition, and you have a permanent connection to the Internet, make sure you change the frequency of keepalive packages from its 3-minute default to something more stretched out e. Thanks 1Bullet, a very clear answer to my question! Your suggestion to change the frequency of packages sounds like it could be the answer to my problem; we do have corporate edition and are permanently connected to the internet.

But so far I haven't been able to find the option to change this frequency. Can you help me out once more? Red Flag This Post Please let us know here why this post is inappropriate. Close Box.
